The Sheffield Steelers confirm that another major piece in the 2017-18 jigsaw has been completed with the re-signing of GB international Ben O’Connor on a 2-year contract.
On announcing the new deal, head coach Paul Thompson said “Benny’s all-around game has really improved. He wants more and more responsibility and has worked incredibly hard to achieve that.
“He is without doubt one of the top all-round defensemen in the Elite League and we are thrilled that he will be with us for at least 2 more years. He is one of the key signings we had to make this summer, we wanted him long term and he we got our man.
“Ben is Sheffield through and through. It’s in his DNA, it also makes him hugely important to us, a real part of our core and leadership group. This is his club. He see’s it as his club as do the likes of Jonathan Phillips and Robert Dowd
“Every day he wants to get better. He stays behind on the ice pushing himself and of course when people like him do that it pushes those around him to do the same
“We talk about the core group when every signing to date has been made. It’s crucial and Benny is right at the very heart of that – we are all thrilled to have him staying with us”
Ben O’Connor said “I’m delighted to have re-signed. Sheffield’s my home and this is my club.
“Even though I had already signed this contract, the experience of the play off’s just brought it home to me how good it is here and how I want more of the same with the great group of team mates we have here.
“The Elite League is getting better and so are the Steelers on and off the ice. I’m thrilled I’ve been a part of our recent success and want to be a big part of the success we have moving forward.
“There is no better feeling than knowing we are settled here long term. This is the place to be, the place to play and I can’t wait to walk back into that dressing room once more in August”
