Aalborg Pirates 1-3 Steelers

What a performance by the Sheffield Steelers in Game 1 of the Continental Cup semi final groupings.

A short-handed Steelers side without Robert Dowd, Marco Vallerand and Tanner Eberle also had play the majority of the game without Brendon Connolly who left the game with a lower body injury.

Barry Brust led the Steelers to a famous and gutsy victory stopping 29 of 30 shots.

After Anthony DeLuca had scored the only goal of the first period, Martin Latal scored the game winner with Matias Sointu adding an empty net goal.

First Period …

Steelers ran into early penalty trouble when Martin Latal and Daine Todd found themselves sitting out minors and granting the hosts a 5/3 power-play. Brust was called into early action making some big saves.

In a end to end opening period it was the Steelers who scored the only goal of the session when Anthony DeLuca fired top shelf for a 1-0 lead at 17.31

Second Period …

The Pirates turned up the heat on the Steelers in a major push back

Brendon Connolly’s penalty gave the Pirates the only power-play of the period when he was called for hooking at 30.16.

Brust again stood tall making point blank saves throughout the period.

Connolly left the game with minutes remaining in the period and wouldn’t return.

Third Period …

The Steelers finally had a power-play of their own 5 minutes into the final period, and like the number 28 bus when one came another quickly followed and a 1.34 5/3 power-play.

Steelers had several good looks to extend their lead but as they had done earlier Aalborg managed to kill the two-man advantage.

That then looked like it would bite the Steelers when after all their pressure Aalborg finally equalised when Kirill Kabanov netted at 49.36.

The Pirates had the momentum and went looking for the winner, however it was the Steelers who stunned the home crowd when Martin Latal scored our second goal and eventually game winner at 54.59 – Aalborg challenged the goal claiming a high stick but after looking at the video the officials ruled that the goal would stand.

That challenge also meant the Pirates would take a penalty for delaying the game, a late power-play.

The Pirates were desperate in the final minutes, after killing the Steelers power-play they pulled their goalie for the extra attacker. Steelers, heroes each and every one of them held out.

A late shot was blocker saved by Brust, the puck fell to Jonathan Phillips who passed to Sointu with the empty net being found moments later for a final score of Aalborg Pirates 1-3 Sheffield Steelers

Brust claimed the man of the match award and the Steelers left the ice to a standing ovation from the travelling fans.

Steelers are back in action at 4pm (3pm British time) on Saturday when they face Olimp Riga.
