It might be the summer but Steelers captain Jonathan Phillips is back hard at it after a couple of weeks off following the World Championships “It was slightly different this year” he said “with the World’s being later in the year
“I always give it a couple of weeks before heading back to the gym, this year it just felt later. I was ready though and along with the other guys on the team that are still here, we are working hard and looking forward to the new year”
Aaron Fox will be Phillip’s eighth coach at the Steelers after being signed by Dave Whistle. “Yes, Whis signed me but then I never played for him as by the time the season had started Dave Matsos was in charge
“We’ve been lucky in the time that I’ve been here with the quality of coaches that we have had and now we look forward to working with Aaron
“I’ve spoken to him and we have had good conversations about the team and the players he is bringing in. Like most people, I only find out who we have signed when the club announces it.
“You always want to do your best for any coach but there is an extra incentive when it’s a new man in charge. You want to impress him at camp, it’s the same for all the guys. We are desperate to have a great season and put last year well and truly behind us”.
With so many new players coming into the club, Phillips was keen to stress the importance of preseason “I guess it’s a little like last year, we have to gel early and the three weeks of ice and two weekends of games will be vital
“The standard of opposition is good once we again, both visiting teams will be a test, but, that’s what preseason is all about. Getting the best preparation you can for the games at the start of September”.
