Belfast Giants 4-1 Steelers

Steelers never recovered from a slow start and a 3-1 first period deficit in Belfast on Saturday evening.

The Giants were 1-0 up in just the second minute when Mitch Ganzak first through traffic and past Tyler Plante.

At 5.01 it was 2-0 Giants, this time Garside, unassisted on the power-play after Jason Hewitt was off for Interference.

Fredrik Vestberg set up Mathieu Roy for the Steelers only goal of the night at 7.33 to bring the scores back to 2-1.

Rather than build on the momentum of the Roy goal the Steelers went further behind, former Steeler Colin Shields scoring with less than 5 minutes remaining in the opening period.

Steelers had chances in the middles session, especially on their two power-play opportunities, but couldn’t find away past Stephen Murphy in the Giants goal.

Again the Steelers pressed in the third but it was the Giants who, with a Jonathon Boxil break away made it 4-1 and take the points for the Giants.

Head coach Paul Thompson said post game “We just can’t start as slow as we did, you can’t play catch up against good teams like Belfast

“We had enough chances later in the game to take something away from here but didn’t convert. Belfast took their chances and we didn’t.

“We head back to Sheffield first thing in the morning and have to make sure we come out at the start of Sunday’s game against Manchester a lot better”
