Steelers rounded off a 4 point weekend with a 4-2 victory over playoff rivals Coventry Blaze.
The Blaze hit two late goals to make things tense in the final couple of minutes, but once Jonas Westerling had found the empty net, the nerves eased.
Earlier Tanner Eberle had opened the scoring to give the Steelers a 1-0 lead at 3.49 with Josh Pitt and Josh McFadden assisting.
Eric Neiley scored his first of two at 18.56 (Pitt and Eberle) to send the Steelers into the first-period break, 2-0 ahead.
That lead was extended at 37.42 when Eric Neiley netted again with Pitt (his 3rd assist of the game) and McGrath getting the helpers.
The Steelers were comfortable at 3-0 and the crowd at the SkyDome silenced. Then with the game looking like it was drawing to its natural conclusion, the Blaze struck back.
At 50.59 Nikiforuk came down the right wing and sniped one past Whistle for 3-1
With Ben O’Connor in the box for slashing the Blaze went on the PP, they pulled their goalie to create a 6 on 4 situation. Then Ryan Martinelli was called for tripping. The Blaze once again pulled the netminder, this time creating a 6 on 3 advantage. They scored, Nikiforuk at 56.49 to make it 3-2. It was a tense last couple of minutes.
Blaze pulled the goalie for the third time but on this occasion, the Steelers pounced on a loose puck and Westerling backhanded home the empty netter for a final score of Blaze 2-4 Steelers.
