“Right time, right place, right situation” that’s how new signing Keaton Ellerby described his move to the Steelers.
“My conversations with Aaron Fox were good, I liked his vision and philosophy on how the game should be played. I liked what he told me about the structure and professionalism of the organisation and generally just liked the way Aaron conducted himself in our negotiations.”
The 32 year old defenceman comes with a great reputation and pedigree. After turning professional in 2008, Ellerby went on to play 218 NHL games with 3 organisations, Florida, L.A. and Winnipeg.
Add to that 198 American league games and spells across the best leagues in Europe playing Germany, Russia, Sweden, Finland, Switzerland and Austria “Yes I’m well-travelled” he laughed “We have had great times since moving over to Europe, seen some great places and met some incredible people. We are excited about extending that journey to the UK, the idea of playing in a English speaking country was a draw for sure”
It wasn’t just the language that came calling Keaton “I did my research and new some guys on the team” he said “I played with Justin Hodgman last year and with John Armstrong with Hockey Canada. I might have also played with another new Steeler but the coach tells me I can’t tell you who he is!
“I’m told we play in a great building, live in a nice City and have incredible fans, who could want for more?”
At 6’5 Ellerby is a big body and he uses that to his strength “I play a physical game and whilst I am a defensive defenceman I do like to join in the play and help out offensively. Whatever helps the team win”
Head coach Aaron Fox commented “Keaton is a big bodied Dman who skates extremely well for his size. He can play a physical game when needed and is extremely sound in his own end.
“Because he skates so well I feel like he will bring some two way offense to our group as well as I like our D’s to play fast and join the play as much as possible.
“Keaton will be a guy who is capable of playing in all situations and think his experience at the highest levels of North America and Europe will be a great addition to our team on and off the ice. I’m Looking forward to getting Keaton in and getting things going.”
