The Sheffield Steelers have signed their first Russian import player as Aaron Fox today confirmed that Nikolai Lemtyugov had put pen to paper on a contract with the club.
Fox had scouted Lemtyugov for his previous team in Zagreb, where he played for part of last season “I had him for a while with me last year and you could see his talent level was at another level and that was after missing extended time because of injury.
“He has had a full off-season working out and will come to camp in top shape ready to go. He played quite a few games with John Armstrong last year so it’s nice to have someone he knows here as well”
Lemtyugov was drafted in the 7th round of the 2005 NHL draft by St Louis. He remained in Russia for the two seasons that followed before joining AHL side Peoria Rivermen when in an 18-month spell he scored 27 goals, 56 points in 96 games.
In the 10 years that followed Nikolai played 388 KHL games for numerous sides including a 4-year spell at Avangard Omsk.
Last season Lemtyugov was recruited by Aaron Fox for the EBEL side in Zagreb, he later moved to Anyang Halla in the Asian League and completed the year there.
“Nikolai is a high-end power forward who is extremely skilled and I expect to be a game changer for us” confirmed Fox.
“Nikolai can play a physical game when needed and is really strong on pucks in Ozone. He can play both wing positions and is also really good on the PP. His English is good enough and has great character in the dressing room”
Fox went on “We signed Nikolai a few weeks ago with a KHL out clause, that has now passed and is 100% committed to the Steelers. He’s coming with his wife and 2 children”.
Steelers exhibition games commence on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th August against HK Poprad at ICE Sheffield. All tickets are priced at just £10 each.
The following Saturday, the 24th August the Steelers play their first game at the Fly DSA (Sheffield) Arena against MAC Budapest with all tickets priced at just £5.
