A superb start for the Steelers on the back of a 3 point night for Evan McGrath saw Sheffield overcome Swedish side Leksands 3-2 at ICE Sheffield on Saturday evening.
Goals from McGrath, Jordan Owens and Robert Dowd was enough to send the sell-out Ice Sheffield crowd home happy with the two teams meeting again on Sunday (5pm)
There were 15 new Steelers in the line up for the start of the game with only Chris Lawrence missing. On the opposition benches Ben O’Connor started for Leksands making his debut.
It was the visitors who took the lead in the 6th minute when Wilde Broms scored unassisted.
On the power-play the Steelers equalised, Jordan Owens with his first goal in a Steelers shirt at 11.36
Anton Kaarlsson then scored a great goal going high from close range on Jackson Whistle to give Leksands the lead with a minute remaining in the first period.
The scoring wasn’t over, a loose puck fell to Robert Dowd who snapped one to equalise with just 4 seconds remaining and a 2-2 opening period.
It was a scoreless middle session with the period full of penalties and special teams.
In fact there wasn’t any further scoring until the 58th minute when Evan McGrath showed all of his qualities to pull the trigger on the game winner at 58.15
Leksands pulled their goalie and gave it a hell of a go in the final minute. Jackson Whistle stood tall and recorded his first Steelers victory receiving a standing ovation at the end of the game.
Steelers man of the match was Evan McGrath with a goal and 2 assists.
