Steelers record breaker Jason Hewitt sent a special “thank you” to everyone connected with the club following his record breaking 627th appearance for the club on Wednesday “It was a very special night for me only spoilt by the result, I guess Edinburgh didn’t read the script
“For Thommo and Jonna to allow me be captain, well its a dream come true, its what we all dream all, leading your team out – I appreciated it very much. In fact all my team mates were outstanding, I had a feeling for the start of the game the boys would do something and it took me a moment or two to realise they hadn’t skated out behind Tyler and I for the introductions”
Before Jason was honoured by the club the Steelers presented former record holder and club legend Ron Shudra with a Steelers 626 shirt in recognition for his time with the club “I think it made the night even more special having Ron there” said Hewey “I may have played one more game than him but i think every player knows he is Mr Steelers.
“I think the club we all love playing for now is only that club because of a lot of work he did – it was cool he was there”
It was then time for Hewitt to be presented with his Steelers 627 shirt – presented by owner Tony Smith and Ron Shudra
“I thought the club might be doing something, i just had that feeling in the days leading up to the game. I think the shirt’s Ron and I received were perfect for the occasion. I’m sure something both of us keep and look back on in time to come with great pride
“I can’t thank Tony and all the staff enough for doing this for me and making the night so special”
Hewey was then joined on the ice by the two men who have played the most games alongside him – Mark Thomas and Jonathan Phillips
“I think everyone who knows me knows that its team first for me. Tomo and Jonna have been alongside me the most and i’ve loved every minute of our time together as Steelers. I had no idea Mark was coming to the game. In fact i spoke with him earlier in the day and he was talking about buying the webcast!
“Having the fans cheer me and give me the reception they did means so much. We all play so hard for them and want badly to bring them success. I know it didn’t seem like that later in the night but we do. We appreciate everything the fans do of us and I can’t thank them enough for their support of the team and my self last night”
