The Sheffield Steelers are delighted to confirm that club captain Jonathan Phillips has signed a new one year contract with the club.
It will be Phillips’ 15th season with the Steelers, his 14th as captain.
Last season in 49 league games Phillips registered 7 goals and 15 points in 49 league fixtures and of course lifted the Challenge Cup trophy after the Steelers victory in Cardiff against the Devils.
Phillips joined the Steelers in 2006 after rising through the ranks of his hometown club in Cardiff. He has now become the Steelers all time leader in terms of appearances having iced an incredible 889 times.
No other Steelers captain has raised as many trophies as Jonathan Phillips, four league titles, three play off championships and a challenge cup. 8 in total.
“Sheffield is my home and the Steelers are the only club I want to play for” said Phillips “I wake up in the morning still motivated to play this game.
“I love being a part of a team, love the game and most of all love winning, something we have a habit of doing here in Sheffield
“Whilst last season finished on a high winning the cup we still feel there was more to come, certainly in the play offs. This off season has been strange and will go on being so I guess for a while yet. There is a desire to get back onto the ice, to train, to play and to win again. Whilst that desire remains I want to keep on playing
“The family are settled here, this is home on and off the ice. We have achieved a lot but there is ample more still to do”
Head coach Aaron Fox said ”I’m very pleased to have our captain back for another season. His attitude, work ethic and commitment to this club plays a huge role in its success.
“He played up and down our line-up last year and excelled in any of those roles he was given.
“He’s also such a good role model for the younger generation especially with the effort he puts into his fitness levels. I’m looking forward to working with him for at least another year.
