Mark Matheson – Steelers New Assistant Coach
Steelers head coach Paul Thompson has confirmed that Mark Matheson will be his assistant coach this coming season.
Matheson will of course continue in his role as a key player in the Steelers side thus becoming the clubs first player assistant since Darrell Hay in 2015.
“Yes I can confirm that Mark will be my assistant” said Thompson “It will be a little different approach with Mark still playing as well.
“We’ve talked a lot over the last couple of months, he is a guy who is very well respected in the locker room and knows what it takes every day to bring a positive performance.
“Mark will have a big workload, but in the first couple of weeks it will be more of Mark the player as we drip feed him in to the coaching duties.
“I think we all know Mark is a super intelligent and hard-working man, he can’t wait to get going and working with me and the team.
Matheson was delighted to be asked to take over the role saying “It’s something I’m looking forward to. It was presented to me and was something I thought I could do a good job with. I’m looking forward to working alongside Thommo and gaining some experience with that role.
“My roles will be wide spread, systems and the thinking of the game for sure but also pre scouting but teams and players.
“The first couple of days have been busy but exciting. I have a good feel about the players and the team we have here”
Mark Matheson takes over the assistant coaching duties from Jerry Andersson who left the club in the summer after a two year stay.
“Once again I’d like to pass on my thanks to Jerry” said Thompson.
“Jerry was a super loyal man and a great hockey brain to have alongside me. I enjoyed working with him both in Sweden and Sheffield”
