Matt Marquardt A Steeler

Steelers head coach Paul Thompson has confirmed the signing of 29 year old left winger Matt Marquardt on a one year contract.

Marquardt spent last season with the Coventry Blaze and prior to this played 268 AHL and 244 ECHL games in North America including the 2011-12 season with the Florida Everblades, where he won the Kelly Cup alongside Mathieu Roy.

“Matt will bring size, skill and intensity,” said Thompson “I think we needed to be a little bigger and I wanted some net presence. With Desy (Guillaume Desbiens) leaving us I felt we had a hole that needed to be filled in that area.”

“I believe Matt has all the tools, I don’t think he had the best of years last season and comes to us perhaps feeling he has something to prove. I like that, I like that hunger that he has expressed to me several times as we spoke.

“When you come to Sheffield, you come to a club expecting and demanding success, I like that Matt has won before. He knows that feeling and knows the pains you go through to experience it. I think he is a very good fit for us on many levels and look forward to working with him”

Marquardt is excited about joining the Play Off Champions saying “I’m thrilled to be joining the Steelers. When one of your best friends plays there (Mathieu Roy) and keeps telling you how good an organisation it is, how good the training is, the facilities and the attention to detail is, you can’t help but want a piece of that. I want to be pushed, I want to work hard and I want to win. After speaking several times to Paul Thompson I was delighted he was keen on me being a part of that.

“I’d like to think I fit in well with the Steelers style of play. I can play in both ends of the rink, I skate well and can score. I can play a physical game as well.”

Steelers top scorer Mathieu Roy was pleased Marquardt was joining his team saying “First Matt is probably the best teammate I have ever played with, especially in the room he will be a big part of our leadership. This year, on the ice we will see what he can do, he is a big guy and plays hard. He is not easy to move around and will do anything to win. I think he will fit into the Steelers way very well.”
