It’s going to be season number five as a Steeler for Big John Armstrong after head coach Aaron Fox confirmed that the 6’2 centre was returning for another season at the Arena.
“This is a guy who we didn’t know if we could get back, but when he called and said he’s working out hard and motivated to play it was just a matter of us working out details” said Fox.
“John plays such an important role for us playing in all key situations and he gives you his best games against the best teams.
“John is also a great character and leader in our dressing room. He’s champing at the bit to get back and am extremely happy he will be back in orange.”
Armstrong has played 212 games for the Steelers, 29thin the all-time appearance list scoring 81 goals and 193 points since arriving from Denmark in 2016.
With the lockdown there was a time where John thought his playing days were over “there was a period of time when I though my hockey life was over” said Big John “I thought, well this is my new life working in the office. In hockey you have highs and lows, the lows aren’t very nice but the highs are incredible. I missed that. Working in the office didn’t give me the same buzz at all.
“I missed hockey, missed Sheffield and being a Steeler. I missed being around the guys, missed scoring.
“My wife and I would sit down at night and just tell each other stories from our time in Sheffield. It got to the point when we looked at each other and just said “let’s make this happen” There was just something missing in our lives
“There is no question that we have unfinished business in Sheffield. We’ve won championships before and then had to rebuild. Last year’s Challenge Cup win was a message that we were back and looking to win again”
