Sheffield Steelers 4 – 5 Manchester Storm

Game 2 of the #2021EliteSeries for the Sheffield Steelers saw them take on the Manchester Storm. The first “home” game for the Steelers saw them back in full Orange (what a sight to behold!).

There was a start for Ben Churchfield in his second professional game following last night’s injury to Muse. Ben being backed up by young Curtis Warburton.

The first 8 minutes following puckdrop saw a scrappy affair with both teams trying to find their feet and systems.

However, at 10.23 in the first period, up stepped Hrabal from just inside the blue line with an absolute cannon which beat Storms netminder, Bonar over his left shoulder. Hrabal assisted by Sam Jones.

The Storm came fighting back and at 12.51 of the first period, the Storm tied the game up at 1-1 with a nice move from Simmonds to slide the puck across the blue paint to find Long who made the finish.

Dowd was building into the game and at 15.40 flew down the right ring and fired past Bonar for an absolute stunner of a goal, assisted by Beaudry.

Adrian Saxrud-Danielsen took a 2+2 towards the end of the first, leaving the Steelers on the penalty kill to start the 2nd period. 2-1 Steelers.

An action packed second period saw 4 goals between the two teams.

The Steelers were unable to kill off the 2+2 Storm powerplay and at 2.21 of the 2nd period, Long bagged his second of the night, assisted by Lutwyche and Fawcett.

A rough period for the Steelers followed and the Storm made it 2-3 with Davies picking up his first goal of the game at 7.48, assisted by Long and Simmonds.

Not long after at 10.59, an Ehrhardt blast from the blue line beat Churchfield to make is 2-4 to the Storm, assisted by Noer.

The Steelers managed to bring it back to 3-4 at 13.28 with a beauty of a goal from Liam Kirk with assisted from Mikyska and Eberle.

Big 3rd period coming up for the boys!

The 3rd period started positively for the Sheffield Steelers with Olden tieing the game up at 4-4 at only 2.28 minutes gone in the period, assisted by Schulze.

End to end action continued right up until the last minute when the puck broke for Fortier in the Steelers Zone who rocketed one over Churchfield’s shoulder at 19.06, unassisted.

The Steelers couldn’t make anything happen in the last few seconds and fell to a win and a loss over the opening #2021EliteSeries weekend.
