Steelers 0-4 HK Gomel

The fate of the Steelers future in this years Continental Cup lays in the hands of Riga after this afternoon’s 4-0 loss to HK Gomel.

Steelers needed to win, draw or lose by 2 goals or less to automatically qualify for the final stages in January. Now we will wait for the outcome of this evening’s game between hosts Aalborg and Riga. Should Aalborg win the game in regulation then they and HK Gomel will progress.

Steelers once again were so shorthanded entering into the game with Marco Vallerand, Robert Dowd, Tanner Eberle and Brendon Connolly missing.

Goalie Barry Brust got the start.

In an end to end opening exchange it was Gomel who scored the all important first goal at the seven minute mark

Steelers killed a first period penalty when Sointu was called for hooking.

Gomel would extended their lead six minutes into the middle period.

Then with Sointu off for slashing Gomel would score the all important 3rd goal that saw them take the lead in the group standings.

All to play for in the third period with the Steelers needing to score the all important goal that could secure qualification to the finals.

Running on empty, shorthanded and injured the boys gave their all and had chances, especially when a high stick to Justin Hodgman resulted in a 4 minute power-play

Steelers failed to convert and had a further chance moments later when Dadonov went for tripping, this power-play only lasted 3 seconds as Big John was called for tripping off the opening face off.

Somehow the Steelers found the energy to keep pushing with Latal and Graham both having chances.

Barry Brust was pulled with 90 seconds remaining but as hard as the Steelers pushed they couldn’t find a way to turn the tie in our favour.

With just 4 seconds remaining the empty net goal the way of Gomel

Final score. Sheffield Steelers 0-4 HK Gomel
