Steelers took a point from a 3-2 overtime home defeat to the Braehead Clan on Saturday and now face the Devils in Cardiff on Sunday evening in a must win fixture.
A sold out ICE Sheffield eagerly anticipated a thriller against the Clan though the game never materialised into a classic.
The Steelers were slow off the mark going 2-0 down early on. First Hammond at 2.37 and then Pitt at 6.20 scored the Clan goals.
Paul Thompson’s side had their chances, a penalty shot was awarded after just 1.56 but despite pulling a nice move Desbiens effort was saved.
Sheffield rallied and bounced back.
With Leavitt off for boarding the Steelers power-play struck. Colton Fretter finishing off a move involving Armstrong and O’Connor at 12.07
With just 1 minute remaining in the first period the game was tied 2-2
This time Andreas Valdix was the scorer, O’Connor again assisted.
The second and third periods remained scoreless, half chances were had by both sides but neither team managed to take a grip of the game.
Into a sudden death 3 on 3 overtime and it was the Clan who took advantage of a Steelers error to create a 2 on 1 bear away.
Just 19 seconds in and Pitt found Beca and his one time shot beat Mustukovs to claim the additional second point.
