Andreas Valdix’s winner at the end of the second period proved to be the difference as Sheffield Steelers picked up a four-point weekend with a 3-2 victory over Braehead Clan.
Following on from Saturday’s win at Nottingham Panthers, Paul Thompson’s side took the points in a five-goal game and extended their 100% Challenge Cup group record.
All the goals came in the final eight minutes of the second period, with three of them in the final 60 seconds of that session, which proved pivotal for the home side.
John Armstrong was first with his name on the board as he got the final touch on what started out as a strike from Colton Fretter to put the Steelers in front.
The second one came a few minutes later as Sheffield’s captain Jonathan Phillips buried a rebounded effort and they looked good at two up.
Clan hit back as Ville Hämäläinen scrambled one in from close range that needed goal line technology to confirm it had crossed the line.
Then Ryan Potulny pulled Braehead level as he struck one to beat Ervins Mustukovs in the Steelers’ goal.
But their joy was short lived as Valdix’s shot flew past Braehead goalie Ryan Nie for a 3-2 scoreline.
A super weekend for the Steelers collecting all 4 points.
Final score: Steelers 3-2 Braehead Clan.
