Steelers made it two wins from two games with a 3-2 victory over Olimp Riga on Saturday evening, a further point in their remaining game, or if Aalborg Pirates drop a point in their game this evening against HK Gomel, would ensure qualification into the Continetal Cup Final.

The Steelers started the game without forwards Marco Vallerand, Robert Dowd, Tanner Eberle and Brendon Connolly (all injured)

Aaron Fox handed Rok Staojanovic the start for the game and the Steelers goalie put in a superb performance turning away 31 of 33 shots.

It was an even opening exchange with both sides having chances.

Steelers though were off to the perfect start when Alex Graham scored his first goal of the competition at 2.22 (Jonathan Phillips) a lead the team would never relinquish.

Riga had their chances and despite two powerplay opportunities they couldn’t find their way through the Steelers defence.

It would be the Steelers turn to enjoy powerplay time in the middle period but despire three one man advantages the only goal of the session would come in 5 on 5 play when Matias Sointu found the net (assisted Justin Hodgman)

In a scrappy game it looked like the Steelers would manage their way through the final stages but Riga’s persistence paid off just 2.49 into the 3rd period when Sandis Mezaraups scored (Sirokovs and Mikelis)

Riga enjoyed two further powerplay chances before Captain Jonathan Phillips re-directed Daine Todd’s shot (also assisted Justin Hodgman) to make it 3-1 at 54.20

At last it seemed that the Steelers could breath and see the game out however Daine Todd (tripping) and Justin Hodgman (hooking) granted Riga a short 5/3 power-play. Sheffield killed both the 5/3 and 5/4 but did concede shortly after when Mikelis Redlihs halved the deficit with just 81 seconds remaining.

Riga pulled their goalie for the final minute but these Steelers heroes battled through and saw the game with a final scoreline of Steelers 3-2 Riga
