Coventry Blaze once again spoiled the Steelers party on Saturday, claiming their second win of the season in Sheffield.
Steelers were quick out of the traps forcing Coventry goalie Jamie Phillips into a handful of early saves, but none that proved too hot to handle.
Michael Davies and Robert Dowd created chances, Aaron Brocklehurst and Marco Vallerand both went close but it would be the Golden Child who opened the scoring.
At 2:26, the Steelers number 75 created his own time and space before rifling a low shot under the blocker of Phillips to get the night off to the perfect start.
It was to be a penalty against Robert Dowd that helped give Coventry an opportunity to get the score level, sitting two minutes for slashing.
Evan Bloodoff would get the final touch in front of Tomas Duba to divert the puck past the Steelers netminder to make the score 1-1. Time of the goal 7.00.
Another powerplay opportunity gave the Blaze a lead at 11:19, Charles Corcoran firing past Duba to make it 2-1.
Steelers pushed for an equaliser but it was to no end product with Coventry standing strong as the period went on.
Step forward Sheffield’s Golden Child once more and Robert Dowd would find a way past Phillips in the Blaze goal with just two minutes to play in the period.
A scoreline that would remain the same for the second period as the teams entered the final twenty tied at two a piece.
Two quickfire goals from the visitors changed the whole atmosphere inside the FlyDSA arena, firstly Matt Pohlkamp at 41:46 and then Evan Bloodoff at 42:59.
There was a strange feeling going in to the final ten minutes, with Aaron Fox’s side struggling to produce any clear cut chances in front of Phillips.
It wasn’t until Lucas Sandstrom tipped in his first goal for the Steelers past the Blaze netminder at 51:50 on the power play.
Could there be another last gasp goal to tie the game up with moments left.
Dowd and Troncinsky both went close but not close enough to claw back the game tying goal.
An empty netter from Chris Pohlkamp with two seconds remaining sealed the deal and that was all she wrote.
Final score: Steelers 3 – 5 Blaze
