Steelers 3 – 7 Devils

It was back down to earth with a bang following the Steelers 5-0 victory on Wednesday night against the Belfast Giants with the Devils taking two points back to the Bay.

On the lineup front for the Steelers, they welcomed Marco Vallerand back into the side but received news midweek that defenceman James Bettauer would be missing for a number of weeks.

The visiting Devils would open the scoring through Joey Haddad (08:31) who finished high into the roof of the net past a sprawling Duba.

In a game that didn’t lack penalty minutes, Brendan Connolly and Matthew Myers came together along the boards for the first of a few tussles between the pair.

A lucky bounce of the stick of Davey Phillips presented Sam Duggan with the perfect opportunity to make it 2-0 to the Devils and he did so at 16:05.

Matthew Myers picked up on a rebound after Matt Pope’s shot was saved by Tomas Duba and with no defensive cover, Duba was beaten under the blocker for 3-0 (19:14)

Heading into the first-period break, Sheffield needed the break, but wouldn’t begin the second period how they would have liked.

At 21:02, Mike McNamee profited from a lucky bounce off the backboard and tapped the puck over the line with Duba committed to the original Blair Riley shot.

Marek Troncinsky pulled a goal back for the Steelers as his shot found a way through traffic and past Bowns time of the goal 28:44.

On the power play at 32:29, Joey Haddad scored his second of the night to increase the lead for Andrew Lord’s Cardiff side.

More penalties came the way of the Steelers as Marco Vallerand was sent to the box for tripping and with the Josh Batch in the box made it a 4on4 passage of play.

As Batch returned, he made it 6-1 with 37:41 played, his first of the season.

With a mammoth task set in the third period for the Steelers, it almost seemed to tough a task to overturn the deficit. A little under fifteen minutes to be played in the tie, a second for Sam Duggan on the night would take the scoreline to 7-1. (46:40)

Time in the third period was winding down as Brendan Connolly fired a laser high over the shoulder of Bowns and into the goal making it 7-2 on the power play (52:24).

Potentially the ‘goal of the week’ came from Steelers forward Tanner Eberle who batted the puck out of midair at 56:21 and past a helpless Bowns.

Final score: Steelers 3-7 Devils

Marek Troncinsky 28:44
Brendan Connolly (Vallerand) 52:24 PPG
Tanner Eberle (Armstrong, O’Connor) 56:21 PPG
