Steelers 5-2 HK Poprad

Job done for the Sheffield Steelers as they recorded back to back home exhibition wins against quality opposition in HK Poprad.

Following Saturday’s 7-4 victory the Steelers set about the Slovakians once again on Sunday, coming out 5-2 victorious.

Steelers started the game shorthanded, still without Martin St Pierre, Arron Fox’s side were also missing the suspended Cole Shudra and the injured James Bettauer and Eric Melland.

Not that you would have noticed as the Steelers started the better side and took a deserved 1-0 lead through a power-play strike from Tanner Eberle (Armstrong and O’Connor) at 8.48

A little rough stuff followed on from the previous night with DeLuca and Samual Mlynarovic clashing in the 11th minute, Dulaca heading to the box on a slashing minor whilst the Slovakian collected 14 minutes with minors for elbows and unsportsmanlike and a further 10 minute misconduct.

The Steelers power-play rolled into town with Brendan Connolly starting off where he left the previous evening scoring the second goal (Vallerand and Brocklehurst) at 11.07

If the PP was going strong the penalty kill was at least an equal, first of all Jonathan Phillips sat out 2 for hooking at 12.39, a minute later Ben O’Connor joined him in the box on an elbows call, Steelers killed the 5 on 3 and subsequent minute of the 5 on 4.

Jordan Griffin, who had lost teeth in last nights game, was playing a regular shift on the blue line and was the next to be dispatched to the box in the 17th minute – Steelers kill killed, in fact it was a 100% record on the kill in the entire game as HK Poprad were 0 for 7 on the PP.

Poprad did get on the board in the final period, a short-handed effort as the Steelers went hunting a third goal. Jorgen Karterud the scorer at 33.43.

Steelers went on to withstand more Poprad pressure when first Dowd (35.07) and then Davies (36.09) took minor penalties. Both the 5/3 and 5/4 powerplays were diligently despatched, Connolly’s cross-checking minor caused little trouble to the killers who carried out their duties with total efficiency.

It was quickly followed by Big John’s first in exhibition play 9 seconds later.

Patrik Svitana pulled a goal back for Poprad in the 49th minute (4-2)

Michael Davies rounded off the scoring (O’Connor and J. Phillips) at 54.57 for a final score of Steelers 5-2 HK Poprad.

Big John Armstrong was the Steelers man of the match – his Eddy was interrupted by Jordan Griffin who took on the big man at centre ice – securing a TKO in the process.
