What a fantastic night at the Fly DSA (Sheffield) Arena.
An incredible come from behind victory against the Nottingham Panthers that rounded off a 4 point Christmas period and also sent over 9,300 fans home happy.
Evan McGrath opened the Steelers scoring in the 7th minute with Anthony DeLuca and Captain Jonathan Phillips assisting.
The Panthers were level at 12.47 when Alex Guptill equalised after a Josh Pitt giveaway.
Nottingham took the lead 6 minutes into the middle period when Alex Bolduc converted.
The line of Armstrong, Dowd and Eberle had been flying over both of the holiday games and it was Big John who had the Steelers back level at 32.39 (Dowd and Eberle)
The Panthers thought they had taken the lead minutes into the final period when Buduc seemed to have scored his second. The goal was reviewed and after a lengthy period the referee’s ruled that there had been goalie interference.
Alex Guptill netted his second of the night with just less than 10 minutes remaining (2-3) and the Panthers were looking odds on for the victory.
Steelers hit back 41 seconds later when Pitt scored from close range to level the game (3-3).
All the momentum was with the Steelers, Josh McFadden broke up a play and raced towards the Nottingham net before unleashing a bullet that beat Mike Garnett all ends up. Steelers led 4-3.
Steelers weren’t done with the scoring. With Stevie Lee off for tripping the PP went to work. Arran Johnsons pass found Josh Pitt on the one timer and his shot was tipped by Evan McGrath for 5-3.
Steelers had a late powerplay when both Billingsley and Hurtubise took minors but there was to be no more scoring.
