Aaron Fox’s Sheffield Steelers took a three goal lead from the Challenge Cup quarter-final first leg at the FlyDSA arena.
A brace from Michael Davies would see the #19 lead the offensive line for the Steelers and help with preparations heading into the return leg.
It was a slow start to the game with neither side willing to give too much away in the game early on.
However, the visiting Storm side had the better of the scoring chances and right on cue opened the scoring through Scott Simmonds at 15:10.
The go-ahead goal would shake the Steelers up on the bench and the tempo of the game was upped a notch.
Sheffield did battle back and tied the game through Michael Davies who was on hand to fire high past a sprawling Matt Ginn in the Storm goal (19:14)
All of this came about after a wonderful move from Ben O’Connor sent Nikolai Lemtyugov into the offensive zone to kickstart the play.
There was a subdued atmosphere throughout the opening period which matched the action on the ice, but the middle frame would be completely opposite.
Three Steelers goals, a second for the Storm and a big clash just inside the Manchester defensive zone.
Firstly, Marco Vallerand would find a burst of speed to beat his man, round Ginn and fire into the goal. (22:10)
Things then became interesting when Brendan Connolly and Tyson Fawcett dropped the gloves just in the Storm zone.
As a result Connolly and Fawcett both received fighting majors along with Fawcett taking a 2+Game penalty for instigation.
On the resulting powerplay, Michael Davies would net his second goal of the night, firing in at the tightest of angles (34:23)
Manchester came straight back with an answer, Scott Simmonds picking up a rebound infant of Tomas Duba and tapping into an empty net.
Courtesy of captain Jonathan Phillips, the Steelers would increase their lead to two goals at 37:55. John Armstrong and Marek Troncinsky combined nicely to find Jono all alone in the slot to fire home.
With just the two goal lead heading into the final period it was a question of who would take a hold on the first leg of the quarter-final.
Well, it would be the Steelers. In a final twenty minutes at the FlyDSA arena that ebbed and flowed, a goal that Matt Ginn would want back extended the lead further for Sheffield.
Tanner Eberle broke down the wing and managed to squeeze a shot under the goalie at his near post. This could prove to be the icing on the cake for a good first-leg showing
It it now just a week until the Steelers head over to Altrincham to take on the Storm in the second-leg of the tie.
Final score: Steelers 5-2 Storm
