Brendan Connolly hit the ground running for the Steelers scoring twice in a man of the match performance against HK Poprad.
Steelers trailed 3-0 after 25 minutes following first-period strikes by Leclerc and Mlynarovic and a second-period effort on the PP form Olejnik.
Steelers then struck back with five unanswered second-period goals.
The turning pointed came at 26.50 when Joona Erving took a double minor penalty for high sticks, the Steelers power-play that had failed to convert on two first period chances clicked with first Connolly (Dowd) and then Eberle (Meland and Davies) scoring.
32 Seconds later and the game was tied at 3-3 when Anthony Deluca scored.
Dowd turned provider setting Marco Vallerand with his first goal in Steelers colours at 35.08 for a 4-3 scoreline, Steelers weren’t to be headed from that moment.
Connolly scored his second with 49 seconds remaining in the period to take a 5-3 lead in after two periods.
Penalties flowed in the final period as the game became chippy. It took until 52.57 for the Steelers to extend their lead to 6-3 when Nikolai Lemtyugov converted on his backhand.
Poprad pulled a late goal back at 57.59 when Peter Kundrik found the back of the net.
Steelers scored a late empty-net goal with Lemtyugov scoring his 2nd (DeLuca).
Penalties flowed at the final whistle, the scrum that followed ensured the post-game handshakes didn’t take place with the visitors asked to leave the ice by the game officials.
