Steelers fall to Nottingham 4-3

The start of the weekend and Friday night was Hockey night at the NIC with the Sheffield Steelers taking on the Nottingham Panthers in their white jerseys in their 2nd ‘away’ fixture against the Panthers.

The Steelers looking to carry on with their winning streak and cement their position at the top of the table, the Steelers currently taking 10 points from their previous 6 games.

Churchfield getting the start in net again with Muse still recovering from injury.

The starting 6 for the Steelers being:

K Schulze

D Phillips

S Olden

B Connolly

L Kirk

The puck dropped for the first and unfortunately, it was all Panthers for the entire period.

The Panthers took the lead at only 2.56 with Perlini beating Churchfield, assisted by Domingue and Boivin.

A slow period of play ensued with the neutral zone blocked until the Panthers doubled their lead at 9.55. Boivin adding to his earlier assist with a goal, now assisted by Perlini and Domingue, that line looking hot tonight.

Ex-Steeler Mark Matheson was the next Panthers scorer on the scoresheet, assisted by Betteridge and Lachowicz. Nottingham leading 3-0.

A change of netminder for the Steelers followed with Warburton replacing Churchfield to refocus the Steelers squad.

The Steelers couldn’t find any sustained pressure and the few shots were being gobbled up by Bowns who also looked on his game.

The Steelers needed a spark and Hewitt tried his best to rile up some Panthers in front of Bowns. The British Bulldog still knows how to get under the skin of his opponents.

Unfortunately, it didn’t help and at 18.37, the Panthers made it 4-0. Boivin with his second of the night, assisted by Domingue.

Big effort needed from the boys in the next.

A big second period was needed for the men in white and orange and the boys came out much stronger.

However, the Panthers did a good job of clogging up the neutral zone and limiting the opportunities.

A couple of good combinations from Jono and Waller and also Olden and Kirk saw Bowns come up big twice and keep the door shut. Going to take something special to beat Bowns tonight.

And that bit of special magic came late on in the period at 36.58 courtesy of a power play goal from The British Bulldog, Jason Hewitt who was on the spot to tip in a Robert Dowd slapshot from the blue line. Hewitt assisted by Dowd and Mikyska.

Can we make the comeback? A quick goal in the third will make this an interesting game!

The Steelers came out and gave it everything in the 3rd, throwing pucks on Bowns who was having a very solid game.

The second goal came pretty quickly for the Steeelers at 46.26 with Mikyska finding the puck at the back post, assisted by Saxrud-Danielsen and Eberle. 4-2.

We had to wait for the next goal which came in the form of a powerplay in which we were 6 on 4 in the offensive zone with Warburton pulled in favour of the extra attacker.

In steps Kirk from inside the blue line with a beautiful slapshot beating Bowns up high at 58.29, assisted by Brendan Connolly.

The Steelers pushed hard for the equaliser and a couple of chances just went wide of Bowns’ net.

The Steelers falling to their second defeat of the #2021EliteSeries.

Our next game is on Sunday against the Manchester Storm. See you there.
