Steelers Junior BHC Debut in the Nationals

Steelers debut in Junior Nationals

February 2nd 2015, the Sheffield Steelers Ball Hockey Club held an open session for children under the age of 16 who wanted to try Ball Hockey, it was designed for fun and to just give children an outlet to try Ball Hockey.  What happened next wasn’t expected, it was remarkable, for the very first session over thirty children turned up in their Orange Steelers shirt, with their hero’s name on the back. Running round the rink, shooting Balls into the nets and celebrating like they’d won their very own Stanley Cup.

Fast forward five months later, 11th July 2015 and the Sheffield Steelers Ball Hockey Club entered two teams in the Junior Nationals at Under 9 and Under 12 level.  In those five months much work has gone in to the Junior System to get to that point but the credit must go to the children.

In those five months they’ve grown as hockey players, children who could barely control a hockey ball are now running rings round the senior players!  The most pleasing aspect, and equally important is how the parents have thanked us for giving our time for the children as they’ve now grown as people, become more outgoing, better behaved and doing better in school.

As we entered the tournament nothing was expected, no pressure was on the children, they went and gave everything playing against clubs who have been established much longer and both teams being young players for their respective age groups.  On the day the results didn’t go our way, our inexperienced told but the children worked incredibly hard and fully deserve credit for how they represented the Steelers name.

Moving forward, the club will continue to grow with the ultimate aim to have a team at ever age level so a clear path can be seen from the Under 9’s right upto the senior teams.  We currently train every Monday with an average of 25 children every week.  We are also looking for more rink availability so we can separate the training sessions for the varying age ranges to give the teams more specialised training.

To get to the position we’ve had plenty of help, the Sheffield Steelers themselves have been nothing but supportive, providing the shirts for the Junior Nationals along with Shaun and Lind Cutts.  Shaun and his family have a passion for Ball Hockey and the Steelers and their own son Ben was a debutant in the Under 9’S wearing the number #81 shirt in recognition of his favourite player, Ben O’Connor.

Jason Hewitt also trains with the Junior Steelers, every Monday he’s on the rink giving support to the children and helping them develop their skills.  We also have a great set of parents in the club who are always willing to help and go that extra mile. Finally to my fellow coaches, Joe Hattersley, Dan Blair, Rob Lomas, Naomi Lee, Byron White and Steve Oldale, every Monday with myself they give up their free time to help with the children, they can’t be thanked enough.
