Steelers Location & Opponents – Continental Cup

The Steelers head to the airport today to take a flight to Denmark to compete in the Continental Cup.

The location for the tournament, with three other teams in attendance is Aalborg.

We will be playing out of the Aalborg Priates Arena called ‘The Gigantium’ which has a capacity of 5,000.

Our hosts are the Aalborg Pirates who play in the Danish Metal Ligaen.

We take on the Pirates first on Friday night.

In the 2020/21 season the Pirates played 48 games, winning 33 and losing 15 with a loss in the final of their play off’s giving them access to the Continental Cup.

Their team is made up mainly of Danish players, with 8 overseas players from Canada, Sweden, Latvia, Russia and the USA.

In terms of experience, they have players which have skated for the Pirates over 3,100 times and also includes 210 games in the SHL, 122 in Liiga, 185 in the KHL and 250 in the DEL.

Their leading points scorers are currently Patrick Bjorkstrand and Tobias Ladehoff who have 22 points and 21 points respectively from 19 games played.

Their starting goalie is 26 year old George Sorenson who is a small goalie at 5ft 9in, but currently boasts a .907 save percentage and 2.10 goals against in his 18 games played.

The Pirates have made a great start to the season, topping the league table in Denmark with 11 wins and 3 overtime wins from 19 games, putting them on 40 points overall, with Herning Blue Fox in 2nd place on 38 points.

Our other opponents this weekend will be HK Gomel from Belarus and Olimp Riga from Latvia – More on them to follow throughout the day!
