Steelers head coach has moved quickly to sign former Nottingham and Coventry forward Chris Lawrence on a short-term contract.
“I have some injury concerns right now,” said Thompson. “We have a run of games coming up and I need to make sure we have enough bodies available to keep on playing the way we have been recently.
“With Chris leaving Coventry last week the timing was right for me to make an initial short-term move. I say initial because you never know what’s around the corner. He wants to play and has some options ahead of him, however for the next few games he will be with us and we are grateful for that.”
Lawrence was a thorn in the Steelers side last season playing for the Nottingham Panthers – he scored 25 goals and 63 points in just 61 games before moving to Coventry Blaze in the summer.
The Blaze and Lawrence parted company last week after Coventry’s poor start to the year.
Lawrence will make his Steelers debut on Wednesday at ICE Sheffield against Edinburgh Capitals before going back to his former club Nottingham on Saturday for Sheffield’s Challenge Cup fixture at the NIC.
