Experienced centre Travis Oleksuk is the latest addition to this year’s Steelers side after Aaron Fox completed his latest signing.
The 32-year-old Canadian hails from Thunder Bay, Ontario.
After a successful time completing his education at the University of Minnesota-Deluth, where he played for four seasons (134 games, 45 goals and 115 points) winning two NCAA championships, Travis turned pro in 2012 and moved to the AHL playing his next four seasons in Worcester and Hartford (271 games, 39 goals and 103 points).
A move to Europe beckoned, first to Bolzano for two seasons in the EBEL (132 games, 30 goals and 69 points) followed by a three year spell in Graz (151 games, 30 goals and 91 points) where Travis won the EBEL championship in 2019-20.
Oleksuk’s versatility is one of many things that attracted Fox’s attention “Travis is a high end two way centre who can play all 3 forward positions” he said.
“Travis will really solidify our depth down the middle and will give us some excellent options when constructing different line options.
“I like his gritty offensive game and is really good in tight areas. He will be a guy who excels on our PP and can kill penalties. I think his winning pedigree and his character will be perfect for our group”.
Oleksuk confirmed that he was looking for a new experience and commented “I’ve had a great time in Bolzano and Graz, but when the contract ended in Graz it was time to look for something new and that is when Sheffield approached me.
“You have to look forward to new experiences and after doing my homework on Sheffield I’m certainly excited about joining the club. I hear the fans are amazing, the City is great and that the people treat you well.
“I spoke with Marco (Vallerand) and he couldn’t say enough good things about being a Steeler. He loves Sheffield and thinks I will as well”.
Travis believes that the Steelers fans will see an all-round player when he arrives in Sheffield, “I’m a reliable two-way centre” he continued “I’m a look for a pass first guy but I can chip in and score as well”
With three championships behind him Oleksuk is keen to add to his collection “You always want to win” he said “I’ve won before so I know how to control expectations and maybe pass on some advice along the way to those who haven’t been in that position before”
