The Sheffield Steelers are delighted to confirm that Captain Jonathan Phillips has signed a new 1-year contract with the club.
Phillips joined The Steelers back in 2006 from his hometown club, Cardiff Devils.
In the years that have followed Phillips has set record after record in a Steelers uniform playing over 1,000 EIHL games with 971 appearances for our club in all competitions.
As a Captain Phillips has lifted 4 league titles, 3 play off championships and a Challenge Cup making him the most decorated captain in the clubs history.
Head coach Aaron Fox said “Jono coming back for me was still an absolute no brainer.
“The level of professionalism, work ethic and passion for our club that he brings daily has made this decision every year since I have arrived a pretty easy one.
“We had a good chat after the season on him still being hungry to do what it takes and he is definitely not ready to close this chapter which was all I needed to hear. He gives me everything he has every shift and was a huge contributor in a lot of key situations for us. It’s great to have 20 back for another year”.
It is more thank likely that Phillips will become the first Steeler to ever play 1,000 games for the club this coming season, but he insists those aren’t the numbers that are important to him “Maybe in ten years time I will look back on the individual stuff, but for me it’s all about the team winning championships and that’s what we will all be aiming for this coming season”.
Phillips confirmed that retirement hasn’t even entered his head “Listen, I broke my sternum and four ribs last year and only took a week off, there is plenty of hunger, desire and championships left in me. When I wake up and all that has gone then the decision will be easy, but I love to train, love to play and love winning with the Steelers.
“I’m back in the gym right now working with Mike and all our focus is on winning as a team. I’m excited for training camp to start, for the dressing room to be full and for the games to come thick and fast”
