The Moose is Back.
Ervins Mustukovs is returning to the Steelers – 6 years after leading the club to the 2010/11 Elite League title.
The 32 year old Latvian international goalie played 63 times for the Steelers in that successful campaign boasting a 92.7% save average.
Since then Mustukovs has spent time in Europe playing for Odense, Denmark (2011/12 92.5%), Mora IK, Sweden Allsvenskan (2012/13 90.2%), Esbjerg, Denmark (2013/14 92.2%), Aalborg, Denmark (2014/15 92%) and last year in Grenoble, France (92.3%)
In 2009 Mustukovs made his senior international debut and since then has been a regular in the Latvian side participating in World Championships and Olympic qualification tournaments.
As well as returning to the Steelers for a second spell Mustukovs is also known to head coach Paul Thompson as the two worked together in Aalborg back in 2014/15
“I think it’s well known that I tried to bring Moose here last year” said Thompson “unfortunately we weren’t able to do the deal then but we are delighted to have landed him this summer
“Moose is such a competitor. He stops the puck and he will bring a level of consistency to our goaltending that we need if we are to challenge and retain our league title
“It helps that he knows Sheffield and enjoyed his previous spell here. It helps me that I know him. Know what to expect from him. Moose was excellent for me in Aalborg. He came to play every night and in my opinion was the best goalie in the league that year.
“I hope he doesn’t have the workload next season that he had in Denmark. I like that we know what we are getting. Mr consistent, Mr 92%”
Thompson also confirmed that Moose would be partnered alongside the returning Brad Day next season.
“Brad had an excellent first year for us” said Thompson “he played valuable minutes and won us important points that helped secure us the title. In fact I said after we lifted the trophy last year that he was the reason we had the success we did. He delivered for us and will only get better.
“Brad is a valuable member of the group and his partnership with Moose will be vital moving forward”
Steelers would like to thank PuckStop for their sponsorship of both Ervins Mustukovs and Brad Day’s equipment for the season ahead.
