The night started so well for the Steelers yet ended feeling like the book of the night hadn’t been completed properly, as it should have been.
512 Sheffield was the Steelers match sponsors and they would be out to drop the ceremonial puck but not before a very special presentation to a very special man.
1000 EIHL games for Captain Jonathan Phillips.
We stood and applauded as first a video was played of his goals and trophy lifts were shown to the 6000 in attendance.
We all remember that celebration after that goal.
Tony Smith, the Steelers owner and Chairman of the EIHL then made presentations on behalf of the club, the league and the Arena.
Before the game Blaze coach Danny Stewart had asked permission for his side to pay their respects to the Steelers captain by asking if all his players could shake Phillip’s hand. A classy move which was appreciated by all in the Arena.
Caroline, Dom and Oliver represented 512 Sheffield for the Puck Drop, Jonathan Phillips was joined by Luke Ferrara for the draw.
Steelers race off to a great start with Robert Dowd scoring the first goal of the night
The Blaze hit back with two of their own to take the lead before Dowd and Armstrong equalised for 2-2
The blaze struck again with another brace to take a 4-2 advantage, could the Steelers make one of their incredible comebacks on the Captains big night…..
It was going to be close but no cigar for Jonathan Phillips and his boys
Lucas Sandstrom scored his first goal at the arena, a well-executed redirect on Brendan Connolly’s shot gave the Steelers a 3rd and some life.
Steelers had chances, Anthony DeLuca chance perhaps the best the team came up within the final moments.
It ended Steelers 3-5 Blaze after Chris Pohlkamp added an empty netter to round off the scoring.
It was a solemn end to a night that had promised so much.
512 Sheffield presented the “Bradfield Brewery” Man of the Match awards.
Louise and Adam & guests from 512 Sheffield presented Evan Bloodoff with his award
Another huge night on the SIV Live sponsored 50-50
The big cash prize going to David Teal who of course asked the Captain to present his cash prize.
Like many David has been buying tickets since the start of time – congratulations David, patience is a virtue.
It was the game-worn shirt of Jonathan Phillips that shirt raffle winner (Sheffield Widow Centre sponsored) Matt Rastrict requested.
This left the final award of the night and 512 Sheffield was back out to present the Steelers man of the match award.
Debbie, Christian, Ryan and Laura did the honours and of course, on his 1,000th EIHL game, it could be presented to none other than Jonathan Phillips.
A big thanks to Bradfield Brewery for their sponsorship of the man of the match awards.
Post-game the Captain’s duties weren’t over.
Congratulations to Stephen and Denise Suter who had Jonno’s signature in the lucky programme
They met the Steelers captain on the bench for a chat and photo.
